Case Studies: Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

Kauffman Stadium, home of Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals, includes several attractions outside of baseball for its younger fans, including a home run derby park, a radar gun for testing the speed of fastballs, and a miniature golf course. The final hole of the miniature golf course has proven to be one of the highlights of these activities thanks to Animated Lighting.

Hardware
  • One Light Show In a Box (LSIAB) with optional MP3 Controller
  • Two LC-16 16-channel lighting controllers
  • One 80-watt stereo amplifier
  • Two speakers in waterproof enclosures
  • One infrared detector
The Monster Brain is networked with the light controllers and the MP3 controller. An infrared beam detector is connected to the Monster Brain's digital input for triggering the show when there is a hole in one. The MP3 controller is connected to an 80-watt amplifier. The amplifier is connected to speakers in water proof enclosures. SSRs are used on the outputs of the light controllers for high-current loads. 40-watt incandescent bulbs are used for the light display.

Software

Using Animation Director from Animated Lighting, the Monster Brain's digital input was connected to the infrared beam detector to detect when the golf ball falls in the hole. There are three pieces to the show.
  1. Idle Routine: Cycles lights slowly when there isn't an input to prevent melting of plexi-glass front cover.
  2. MP3 Trigger: Picks one of four random MP3s to play when the digital input is triggered by a hole in one.
  3. Main light routine: The light routine that turns lights on and off when the digital input is triggered by a hole in one.
Once the show is finished, the idle routine keeps cycling until the next hole in one.
