The $250 Million
Sprint Center in Kansas City was completed in October 2007 and built not only
for world-class concerts and large conventions, but also to potentially be the
home to a National Basketball Association (NBA) and/or National Hockey League
(NHL) franchise. Animated Lighting played a roll in adding WOW to the facility.

One
of the main attractions within the Sprint Center is their scoreboard.
Daktronics was hired
to custom design a scoreboard that would not only provide scores and video,
but also have an exciting lighting display on the top to dazzle the crowds.
Daktronics contacted Animated Lighting to help with the control, programming
and testing of this lighting display via their Light Show In A Box™ (LSIAB) product
family.
The lighting display consists of 28 neon
fixtures that ring the top of the scoreboard. The scoreboard is on the
left of the picture.
The requirements for control of the dynamic
sign included the following:
-
A lighting “show” with multiple lighting
effects (chase/blink/dance, etc.) for the fixtures with the ability to
change from one lighting sequence to another with a push of a button
-
If lighting sequences were not desired, the ability to
have all the fixtures on or off by pressing a button
-
All aspects of controlling the fixtures needed to be
handled from the Control Room located at the top of the Sprint Center
A
wireless
connection of the fixtures from the Control Room was needed. Since the
scoreboard could be raised, lowered or removed depending on the event,
there was no practical way to run fixed communication cables.
Animated Lighting provided the following
equipment to meet the customer requirements:
-
One
custom keypad installed in the Control Room. Separate buttons were
provided for “All On”, “All Off” and multiple lighting effects. An
“A/B” toggle was provided that allowed for any of up to ten lighting
effects to be used depending what was happening during the event.
(Keypad is in center of above picture just to right of the computer
mouse.)
-
Two
Wireless Transmitters. One transmitter is located in the Control Room
(as seen in the picture above just to the right of the video monitor)
and the other is located on top of the scoreboard connected to the
Animated Lighting Monster Brain animation controller. Data is sent between the Control
Room and scoreboard via these transmitters.
-
One
Monster Brain animation controller. This was installed on top of the
scoreboard. Animated Lighting light controllers were connected to the Monster Brain to
execute the desired lighting effects.
-
Two
16-Channel Light Controllers. The neon fixtures are connected to the
various lighting channels of these controllers. Commands are sent
wirelessly rom
the Control Room to the Monster Brain on the sign and the Monster Brain
is connected via
Category 5 cables to the light controllers.
Animated Lighting provided the hardware, custom programming and on-site
support at Sprint Center. The project included installation, testing, and
troubleshooting training for venue personnel who would be
responsible for maintaining the scoreboard after the installation. |
